(More customer reviews)I received my Palm Pre Plus from AT&T about two weeks ago. I have owned a Palm Centro for a couple of years now, and I naively expected the same functionality from the Pre Plus that I enjoyed with my Centro. That really was my fault as I didn't do enough homework on the features and functions of this phone compared to the traditional Palm OS.
Physically, the phone felt comfortable in my hands. It wasn't heavy enough to be burdensome, but it wasn't so light that it felt like a toy. The keys have the traditional clear overlay that protects the letters, and they are a bit larger and better spaced than on my Centro or Treo 650. I was very pleased with the slide out keyboard.
Learning to navigate the phone via the swipe motions took about three or four days to become totally natural. It would have been much easier if Palm had included better instructions with the phone, but the included manual contained little more than instructions on how to turn it on, answer a call, etc.
Setting up the necessary software to customize the phone was moderately challenging, even though I am one of two of my school's officially labeled "geeks". Web OS seemed to me to have been shipped prematurely. There are many wonderful customizations available, but you have to download several programs and rely on what's called "Homebrew Apps" or third-party software for the features that old-school Palm users take for granted. For example, there is no custom ringtone for unknown callers, no options for reminders, no easy scrolling through a text message to quickly fix an error in the line above, limited or no brightness options, etc.
Traditional Palm software for the Centro and Treo phones will not work on WebOS. You can buy an app for the Pre that will allow you to run some (but not all) Palm OS apps on the Pre.
There is no included phone-to-pc sync option. For me and many other Centro/Treo users, this was a BIG deal. There is an app that will allow you to back up your Pre to your desktop, BUT the the traditional hot sync is not available on WebOS. The phone comes with Google calender sync installed, but any attempt to sync Google Calender, the Pre, AND Outlook will result in possibly hundreds of duplicate event entries. There is third-party software you can purchase to allow a full sync with Outlook, but it can cost as much as $60-$70. Even those software options do not back up your media to your computer. You are on your own with that one.
Another nasty surprise was the missed call notification. When the Pre informs you that you have missed a call, a tap on the screen will open up the dialog that lets you know whose call you missed. Unfortunately, it immediately dials the number of the missed call AT THE SAME TIME. It is really unpleasant to be in the middle of a meeting or other activity and find yourself trying to explain to your mother that you really didn't mean to call her back right then or why you felt compelled to call her and hang up.
As they say in the world of Pre, though: There's a patch for that. In other words, you can download system tweaks that change many of the basic functions of the Pre and make it more user-friendly. While I think that's great, I also believe that most of it shouldn't be necessary.
On the bright side, should you brick your phone playing around with Homebrew (unofficial freeware) apps or patches, Palm has available for download Web Doctor. This script will restore your phone to factory specs, erasing everything except what your Pre shipped factory with. When you sync with your Palm account, your address book, Palm store apps, and a few other things will be restored. Your media, however, is gone forever unless you have used USB mode to access your media folders and backed them up manually or used a cloning app to copy your Pre data for restore.
There is no removable memory option. The Pre comes with 16g on-board drive space, and that's it. It offers the option to choose "charge" or "Use in usb mode" when you plug in the included USB charging cable.
While the battery life is terrible, there has been a sharp drop in the price of charging accessories. The Touchstone (a cable-less charger) has dropped from the $70 range to around $20 shipping and all here on Amazon. There has likewise been a similar drop in the price of car chargers, AC to USB converters, and replacement batteries.
An item of note: The batteries for the Pre are physically indistinguishable from Centro batteries with the exception of the black outer packaging that the Pre battery comes in. Palm says that you are not to use Centro batteries in the Pre, but they have not as yet made an official statement as to why. They only warn you that using a Centro battery in a Pre can damage your phone. They just won't tell you how. This is especially frustrating as not only are the two batteries both listed at 1150mAh, but there is a substantial price difference between the two - not to mention that many Pre users already have a ton of Centro batteries lying around gathering dust. If you ever get bored, you can always head over to one of the Pre message boards on the web and get the Pre/Centro battery argument going (again). You'll have more entertainment than you can stand, I promise.
There are many features of the Pre that made the phone worth the (mostly initial) aggravation. The ability to minimize apps, leaving them open as you open another, is wonderful. As I don't have the best data access in my location, I can open the web browser and leave it minimized while I send a text or record an event into my calender. It comes GPS enabled, and while the AT&T GPS servie is extra, Google maps is not.
The browser is incredibly easy to use, and it offers several short-cut options that put your favorite sites within single tap availability. It also switches between apps quickly and easily without forcing you to start from the beginning in each one. It also still threads chat messages.
You get thirty days of free phone support with your new phone, and after thirty days, phone support is about $15 an hour. Chat support is always free.
The Pre Plus is is a great geek phone that with many options available for customization - including many free themes. It can get expensive buying the apps that many Centro users have felt should have been included with the phone, however, and setting up the customization will be beyond the comfort zone of may users. While the battery life is abysmal, chargers and replacement batteries are becoming more affordable. The graphics are stunningly clear and sharp, the screen is an optimal size in relation to the device, and the versatility of functioning as a thumb drive is an added plus.
In summary, the crux of it is this: it has a mixed bag of positives and negatives, and the way you will feel about it will be directly related to the degree of tech-savvy that you have. If you are a Treo or Centro user who is upgrading, don't expect a great (or even pleasant) out-of-the-box experience, and you need to be prepared to shell out additional $$ for third-party software needed to complete the functionality of the phone. For me, that meant spending about $100 on additional software to allow me to sync, run some classic apps, and to replace a couple of old favorites that just wouldn't run on an emulator.

Palm Pixi Phone (Sprint) Review

I will break down this review into the pros and cons of the Palm Pixi. Please note that this review is comparing the phone to all other phones, not a comparison between the Pre. This is for people who want to know how the phone is as a phone.
Pros
*Thin, sleek candy bar design.
-The phone has an excellent look and feel to it. It is light yet still feels strong and durable. Plus the back is rubberized giving it great grip in your hand or anywhere you place it.
*WebOS software
-Multitasking, applications, synchronization with all your accounts, WebOS offers many features that make you question how you ever survived without it. The two really great features of WebOS, multitasking and synchronization, should be enough incentive alone to purchase this phone. Being able to check my email, open a link from said email into a new tab, proceed to shop on the web, then switch over to my messaging window and chat with someone while listening to music is simply stunning. Plus having my contacts list automatically update with my Gmail and Facebook contacts is a huge help. I could go on and on but I wont. WebOS is it, the future of mobile phone operating systems.
*QWERTY Keyboard
-This is just a personal preference but I love qwerty keyboards. That being said some qwerty boards are less than desirable. This keyboard may seem small but I have found very little issue using it. The buttons are raised at the perfect height, giving you nice separation between the phone itself and the keys. They also have a comfortable feel to them, providing a very satisfying click when pressed. Nice layout and design and definitely deserves kudos.
*Touch Screen
-The touch screen is detailed, vibrant, and most of all, very responsive. The screen looks great and performs very well.
*Multimedia
-The phone allows you to sync with iTunes and download your music. The music player is basic but performs very well. It also supports videos in mp4 as well as streaming sources like Youtube.
*Other Smartphone Features
-This phone offers Web Browsing, Youtube, Amazon MP3 Store, Sprint GPS Services, Palm Application Catalog, and Sprint TV.Cons
*Mini USB Plug
-There is a flap protecting the place where you plug the phone in to charge, transfer data, etc. This flap is very difficult to open up.
*Boot Up Time
-This phone takes several minutes to boot up. This is mildly annoying if you have to turn the phone off because you will then have to wait around 3 minutes to boot it back up.
*Minor Bugs
-There are some minor bugs with WebOS. With each update they seem to make improvements but bugs still do exist. I've noticed that there have been a couple occasions where my phone has been off even though I did not power it down. When I boot it back up the battery life is fine making question what the deal is. Also when watching videos and you receive a text or phone call, the phone experiences some serious slow down and delay.As far as performing the basic phone duties it does very well. Call sound quality is good, not exceptional, but definitely good. Also the clarity of the microphone is very good as well, no complaints when speaking to other people. The speaker phone is fairly loud yet doesn't sacrifice the quality at all. The battery life is quite sufficient in my opinion. With moderate usage, several phone calls, intermittent texting, and some web surfing, I found the phone's battery life lasts around two days.
I recommend this to anyone looking for a new phone and wants to venture into the smartphone market. This phone is sleek and provides some truly awesome features. The Pixi has some flaws but no phone is perfect, we all know that. If you take into account all the features along with the price ($24.99), this phone is simply unbeatable.

Nokia E73 Mode Symbian Phone (T-Mobile) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this during the first week that it came out. My previous smartphones were all BlackBerries, most recently an 8900. I looked at the offerings from every major U.S. carrier and this was by far the most capable candy bar QWERTY on the market. It still is. The only competition is from the Blackberry. These two are in a class apart.
The E73 does everything. The camera takes great pictures even outside at night without streetlights! I take more pictures and send more picture messages and I email more pictures with this than I ever did with the BlackBerry. Typing on this keyboard is better than 1he Blackberry with one hand or with two. I find myself instinctively typing letters correctly without looking at the keyboard. The web browser is superior. The speakers are loud enough.
There are tons of built-in and pre-loaded apps. Ovi maps beats BlackBerry maps and google. The flashlight app that is built-in to the keyboard is convenient and bright. The Radio application is fun to use and doesn't drain the battery. YouTube is pre-loaded. I have never been able to view YouTube on a Blackberry. Podcasting is pre-loaded. QuickOffice is pre-loaded; so, I do not have to carry a laptop anymore.
It is not as fast or as addictive as the Blackberry. Blackberry is still the ultimate messaging device. This phone is not easy to use. Sometimes settings are mysterious to find, and navigating menus is slow enough to annoy me. The wi-fi calling didn't work that well for me. I kept dropping calls for no apparent reason. So, I turned it off, and now my calls are stable everywhere T-Mobile has good coverage. It is a great all around phone with loads of style and a more solid build than most smartphones that I have played with. Most of the others felt like toys compared to this, and this phone is thin enough to carry in a shirt pocket. This phone just looks and feels classy like a black silk tie.
If you want the most efficient messaging platform, a Blackberry is better. If you want everything, get this as long as you are willing to learn how to use it.

Palm Pre Plus Phone (Verizon Wireless) Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, before I rant about the battery, I want to warn Palm fanboys about the one change you need to prepare for (note: I am a huge Palm fanboy). If you aren't currently using a Treo or Centro phone, skip the next paragraph.
Not a complaint, just some advice because Palm has ALWAYS been the best at contact/calendar management. No one else comes close. If you like the way PalmOS has always sync'd directly with your PC (Outlook, Palm Desktop, etc) - you will need to buy a 3rd-part application to do that with the Pre or Pixi. Palm has dropped support for that. It can synch with an Exchange server like a Blackberry (my company won't support it) or with Gmail (I will never share my contacts with Google, Yahoo, or any other public site). Most of these apps come with a trial period. I recommend that you have it installed on your PC before you do any contact sync or email set up. It worked flawlessly and it's just like I've been doing it with Outlook for many years. When setting up your Pre for the first time, skip the step to set up e-mail so you can synch your contacts with a third party app first. IT's much less confusing.
Oh, and DON'T sync with more than one 3rd party app, because you will duplicate every contact. The Pre is able to see the duplicates and show them as a single contact (sort of) but I tried it with more than one, and I had to do a hard reset and then sync with only one 3rd party app to de-dupe the contacts. PocketMirror does wireless sync, but it is VERY slow with my 3,000 contacts. It's a litte faster via Bluetooth. CompanionLink is much faster, but requires a USB cable.
Ok, for those who don't care about contact/calendar sync, or who get one of the 3rd party apps, here is my summary of the Palm Pre: FANTASTIC!
It is very close to the iPhone in ease of use, innovation, etc. Each has a few unique advantages. But, the Palm wins on the stuff I care about - multitasking being a major item... I can listen to music AND surf the web. Can't do that on an iPone, iPad, or any other iDevice. That's huge.
The ONLY complaint I have is battery life, which is non worse than an iPhone. Palm has made major improvements with 1.4, and needs to keep working on it. Battery drain goes down after you have had it a few weeks, because then you aren't playing with it 7x24. 3G access is what uses the most battery, just like the iPhone. I bought a Siedio extended battery from Amazon.com to provide some improvement, and reducing screen brightness also helps. But, if you are doing a lot of web browsing, tweeting, etc... it's going to drain about 10% per hour - but no worse than the Motorola Droid, by the way. I get about 8 hours of heavy web use, once you've charged the battery for a few cycles.
So, carry a spare battery (another great feature the iPhone doesn't have - you can quickly swap batteries) - or get an extended life battery like I did. Other than that, I also wish it had a soft keyboard and a few things that would make it easier to surf and text in landscape mode...
If Palm would add a few refinements like better landscape support,it would be a perfect phone.
And the icing on the cake? The network, of course! The Pre+ runs on Verizon, and not AT&T. That drives all my iPhone fanboy friends crazy. It was well worth the wait for Verizon to get this phone. I recommend this for everyone... I especially recommend this phone for iPhone users so they can get off the AT&T network...
Now Verizon can say "there's an App for that" as well as "there's a map for that", and that, my friends, makes this a terrific phone!
EDIT: Palm recently released version 1.4 (which auto-magically updates your phone over the air) and it has improved battery performance greatly. They also added the ability to take movies and edit them right on the phone. Perfect for putting videos on facebook and twitter, etc.
Folks, you REALLY need to try this phone.
